The City of Pooler is proud to announce the completion of the Pipemaker’s Canal Widening Project, a significant infrastructure improvement made possible through funding from Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST). This expansion represents a major investment in the city’s long-term infrastructure resilience.
The Pipemaker’s Canal serves as the primary drainage point for approximately 5,600 acres west of I-95. Construction on this phase of the project began in 2024, expanding the canal by 40 feet. This increased width is projected to improve water flow by more than 60 percent for greater capacity to convey stormwater during larger rain events and a reduction in peak flooding along the corridor.
The 1.6 million dollar project reflects the City of Pooler’s strategic investment in drainage infrastructure and with 97 percent of the funding provided by SPLOST, the project is a major fiscal win for residents
Mayor Karen L. Williams celebrated the project’s completion, noting its importance to Pooler’s future.
“This project reflects our city’s ongoing commitment to investing in sustainable infrastructure that supports both current residents and future development. Through the responsible use of SPLOST funds, we have enhanced Pipemaker’s Canal to improve stormwater management, reduce flooding risks, and ensure our city continues to thrive as we grow,” Mayor Williams said.
She continued, “The City of Pooler extends its gratitude to local contractors, engineers, and city staff whose hard work and dedication brought this project to completion. This ribbon cutting marks not only the success of a vital infrastructure project but also the continued partnership between the City of Pooler and its citizens through SPLOST funding.”
Mayor Pro Tem Aaron C. Henry highlighted the project’s impact on long-term planning.
“This project’s completion marks a major milestone. It also begins a sustained investment in the long-term resilience of our city’s drainage infrastructure,”
Councilmember Michael Carpenter emphasized the importance of preparing for future generations in the City of Pooler.
“This project is not just about fixing drainage and city infrastructure. It is about laying the groundwork for our future. As a father, I think about the next generation who will call this city home. Today’s ribbon cutting marks more than the completion of a canal. It marks our commitment to building a stronger, safer, and more resilient Pooler for every family who believes in progress, faith, and community,”
