Important Update on the Water Service Line Inventory
The Department of Public Works recently issued a communication to certain customers regarding the status of their water service lines. These lines carry water from the City’s water main to your building or home. While we understand that this initial letter may have caused concern, please be assured that there is no immediate cause for alarm.
Who Received a Letter?
Letters were sent to all water customers with structures built before December 31, 1989, according to Chatham County Board of Assessors’ records.
What is the Lead and Copper Rule Revision (LCRR)?
The EPA recently updated the Lead and Copper Rule (LCR) to further enhance drinking water safety. These revisions require municipalities to inventory all water service lines to identify potential lead or galvanized components in piping and notify customers about the materials used.
What You Need to Know
- Inventory of Service Lines: Over the next 3-6 months, the City will continue to inventory and identify the materials used in the service lines connected to homes and businesses.
- Structures Built Before December 31, 1989: If your service line material has not yet been verified, it is currently identified as “Unknown,” and you will have received a notification by mail entitled “Notice of Lead Status Unknown Water Service Line.” Again, please note that this does not necessarily mean lead is present in your service line.
- Structures Built After December 31, 1989: Structures built after December 31, 1989, will not have lead service lines due to federal regulations that banned the use of lead pipes in 1986 and will not be receiving a notification.
