GDOT | Chatham Parkway at I-16 – Closure Schedule

A Message from the Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) Design-Build Team (DBT)

An updated schedule has been issued relative to the planned, 80-hour, complete closure of Chatham Parkway at I-16. Weather permitting, the closure remains scheduled to start at 9 p.m. on Friday, July 26, 2024, and end at 5 a.m. on Tuesday, July 30, 2024 (Complete Closure Period).

Purpose of Closure:
The traffic impacts are necessary to complete the work required for the raising of the existing Chatham Parkway bridge over I-16.

Traffic Impacts:
Please note, during this closure, all ramps on and off I-16 will remain open, except as noted below. (See Map 1 – Detour).

During the 80-hour, Complete Closure Period the traffic will be impacted as follows: 

  • I-16 eastbound (EB) off-ramp traffic will only be able to turn south onto Chatham Parkway
  • Northbound Chatham Parkway traffic approaching I-16 will only be able to turn right onto I-16 EB
  • I-16 westbound (WB) off-ramp traffic will only be able to turn north onto Chatham Parkway and the I-16 WB off-ramp will be closed to traffic when I-16 WB is closed at Chatham Parkway
  • Southbound Chatham Parkway traffic approaching I-16 will only be able to turn right onto I-16 WB

From Friday, July 26, 2024, at 9 p.m. through Saturday, July 27, 2024, at 10 a.m.:

From Saturday, July 27, 2024, at 10 p.m. through Monday, July 29, 2024, at 5 a.m.:

From Monday, July 29, 2024, at 9 p.m. through Tuesday, July 30, 2024, at 5 a.m.:

When the roadway reopens on Tuesday, July 30, 2024, the Chatham Parkway bridge over I-16 will remain four lanes, two in each direction, with a reduced median width and temporary barriers along the outside edges. The left-turn lanes onto I-16 will have reduced lengths for the duration of subsequent work which is anticipated to last approximately four months following the closure.

Not all navigation applications may reflect the detour at the time of the closure and motorists are advised to follow the detour signage and posted speed limits.
