The City of Pooler is proud to announce it has earned a Class 5 rating through the FEMA National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) Community Rating System (CRS) based on our 5-year cycle verification. The CRS is a voluntary incentive program that recognizes communities for floodplain management practices that exceed minimum NFIP requirements.
The City secured this rating through a combined effort involving public outreach on flood safety and insurance options and maintaining stricter building and development standards, including preserving open space in flood-prone areas. This milestone recognizes the City of Pooler’s proactive flood mitigation efforts saving residents and business owners in the Special Flood Hazard Area (SFHA) an average 25% in their annual National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) premiums. Residents do not need to take any action to receive the discount; it will be automatically applied to all new and renewed flood insurance policies on or after October 1, 2026.
As this is a voluntary program, the rating reflects the City of Pooler’s commitment to improving overall resilience and safeguarding property against severe weather.
“Achieving a Class 5 status is a testament to our community’s ongoing dedication to public safety and flood resilience,” said Nicole Johnson, Director of Planning & Development, who also serves as the City’s Floodplain Manager and Community Rating System Coordinator. “Our City’s commitment enhances public safety, property protection, protects the natural functions of floodplains, and reduces flood insurance premiums. Not only are we better protected against future flooding and disasters, but these efforts are putting money directly back into the pockets of our property owners.”
