Public Notice | The City of Pooler Celebrates National Arbor Day by Announcing Major 35 Acre Purchase of Wetlands

Published on: Apr 24, 2026

In honor of National Arbor Day, the City of Pooler announces the purchase of 35 acres of wetlands and woodlands off Old Pine Barren Road for $480,000 using the Pooler Tree Fund. In March, City Council approved use of the tree fund to purchase property for the purpose of greenspace preservation. With this purchase, the City of Pooler removes this undeveloped 35 acre tract from potential development and preserves it for long-term environmental benefit. The property features upland areas that transition into wetlands and lead to a pond at the rear of the site, supporting wildlife habitat and stormwater drainage.

Mayor Karen L. Williams commented following the closing earlier this month:
“It’s absolutely gorgeous. As you know, some of the last spaces we have in Pooler are being grabbed up by developers. We purchased this property so it could not be developed. We changed our Tree Ordinance so that we could use those developer funds to purchase land, and that’s what we did — to preserve this for future generations.”

Council Member Shannon Black Valim added:
“As a City Council member, I am proud to support the city’s focus on greenspace and the enhancement of our community.”

City staff will continue exploring opportunities for an educational trail and other potential amenities. The primary focus of this acquisition, however, is preserving natural space for future generations.
