Weather Event | Winter Storm Enzo – Updates & Resources

01/24/2025 @ 18:53 – ROADWAY RECOVERY UPDATE: West Pine Barren Road and Memorial Boulevard are cleared and treated, and road conditions across the city have greatly improved.

  • Primary Roads: Highway 80, Pooler Parkway, and Jimmy DeLoach are in excellent condition.
  • Secondary Roads: Pine Barren Road (Bloomingdale city line to Hwy 80), South Rogers Street, Quacco Road, and Memorial Boulevard are cleared and in excellent condition.
  • Tertiary Roads: East Haven Boulevard and Godley Station are inspected and open in acceptable condition.

While these roads are now passable, temperatures are expected to drop overnight, and refreezing is likely. Please avoid unnecessary travel tonight. If you must drive, reduce speed, avoid sudden braking, and increase your following distance.

01/24/2025 @ 10:38 – RECOVERY EFFORTS CONTINUE: The City of Pooler is continuing its recovery efforts with a focus on improving roadway conditions across the city. Our crews have completed a preliminary assessment and are currently prioritizing the clearing of secondary roads, while progress on primary roads continues.

  • West Pine Barren Road: Snow removal is actively underway.
  • Memorial Boulevard: Crews will begin work here once West Pine Barren Road is cleared.

Thank you for your patience as we work to ensure safe travel throughout Pooler.

01/23/2025 @ 19:48 – GDOT’S 511: A courtesy service from the Georgia Department of Transportation, 511 Georgia provides free, real-time traffic information 24/7. Travelers can call 511 to report icy road conditions or incidents, with operators available to assist around the clock.

Georgia DOT also offers complimentary interstate highway assistance 24/7 for motorists across Georgia through their CHAMP program. CHAMP operators are able to provide emergency response, offer motorists assistance, remove roadway debris, and address maintenance issues. Call 511 for vehicle assistance or to report an issue.

01/23/2025 @ 19:10 – ROADWAY CLEARING CONTINUES: In response to Winter Storm Enzo, the City is taking a methodical, prioritized approach to clearing roadways.

Primary Routes: Major roads like Highway 80 and Pooler Parkway have been cleared and are being closely monitored for ongoing treatment. GDOT provided additional support today for clearing Highway 80.

Secondary Roads: Once primary routes are cleared, attention shifts to secondary roads like Pine Barren Road, Rogers Street, and Benton Boulevard. As of today, Pine Barren Road has been cleared from Highway 80 to Pooler Parkway, with salt applied on the bridge and surrounding areas to prevent refreezing overnight. Similarly, South Rogers Street has been cleared from Pine Barren to Highway 80, with salt treatments applied to ensure safety.

This strategic approach is designed to maximize resources and ensure the most efficient response, with the ultimate goal of ensuring public safety and maintaining smooth mobility through the ongoing storm challenges.

01/23/2025 @ 16:24 – WASTE COLLECTION UPDATE: Atlantic Waste has reported that due to  ongoing unsafe driving conditions, residential waste collection will be suspended until next week. Collection will be made on regular days of service and will include any overflow household refuse due to the winter storm delay. Recycling carts can be used for extra waste bags, if needed, and should be set out with waste carts on regular collection days next week. Questions? Visit Atlantic Waste or call (912) 964-2000.

01/23/2025 @ 15:41 – CITY CLOSURES: With hazardous conditions still present, the decision has been made to extend the closure of our administrative offices through Friday, January 24. This includes the Senior Center and all Recreation activities. Critical workforce and public safety personnel will maintain standard operations.

While significant progress has been made on primary roads, secondary and tertiary roads remain a challenge. These areas are still impacted by snow and ice, making travel difficult and unsafe for both residents and staff. We are continuing to monitor conditions, and appreciate your patience and support.

01/23/2025 @ 10:43 – CURRENT ROAD CONDITIONS: Following Winter Storm Enzo, road conditions remain challenging. While main roads like Pooler Parkway and Highway 80 are mostly passable, hardened snow on shoulders and medians creates safety hazards. Side streets are particularly dangerous due to ice and snow.

  • Pooler Parkway & Highway 80: One-lane traffic in both directions. Snow on shoulders affects visibility, turns, and lane changes.
  • Side Streets: Hazardous with snow and ice. Avoid travel unless necessary.

Salt treatments on bridges have minimized freezing risks, and Public Works crews have worked diligently to ensure safety. However, temperatures will remain below freezing through midday, slowing melting, and the increased traffic from businesses reopening may lead to delays.

CEMA has also reported that traffic is making it harder for GDOT to clear icy roads. They are encouraging residents to avoid driving, if possible, to allow GDOT crews to work safely. Thank you for your patience.

01/22/2025 @ 15:50 – POTENTIAL FOR REFREEZING: Winter Storm Enzo has moved through our area and while conditions have improved, near-record low temperatures and dangerous wind chills as low as 15 degrees are expected tonight, leading to the refreezing of wet roads.  Black ice will be a significant concern, creating very hazardous conditions. We strongly urge residents to exercise caution and avoid travel unless absolutely necessary. Stay safe as we continue to monitor conditions.

01/22/2025 @ 15:32 – CITY CLOSURES: City of Pooler administrative offices will remain closed tomorrow, Thursday, January 23, as will the Senior Center and Recreation activities. A decision regarding normal business operations beyond Thursday will be made after 11:30 a.m.

Atlantic Waste has reported that due to the inclement weather and road conditions, trash and recycling services have been suspended through Thursday. If your scheduled collection day was Wednesday or Thursday for this week, it will be delayed until Wednesday, January 29 and Thursday, January 30. Friday services are expected to resume as scheduled.

We urge everyone to stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary, especially tonight. With temperatures expected to drop again, roadways could refreeze, creating even more hazardous conditions. Please prioritize your safety and exercise caution.

01/22/2025 @ 7:47 – IMPACT TO ROADWAYS: Our dedicated critical workforce and public safety personnel have been out assessing the roadways, and as anticipated, Winter Storm Enzo has significantly impacted our entire area, to include our roads and bridges. Roads and bridges are covered in a mixture of snow and ice, making travel unsafe. We urge residents to stay home and avoid travel unless absolutely necessary.

01/21/2025 @ 12:10 – PROTECT YOUR PIPES: As freezing temperatures are expected in the coming days, the City of Pooler reminds all residents and businesses to take precautions as they deem appropriate to protect their water pipes from freezing. Frozen pipes can potentially lead to costly repairs and possible water damage. Here are some simple steps property owners may wish to consider:

  • Know Where Your Main Water Shutoff Valve Is: In case a pipe does freeze and burst, it’s essential to know how to shut off your main water valve to prevent flooding and water damage. Make sure all household members or business employees know where it is located.
  • Let Faucets Drip: Allow a small, steady drip of cold water from faucets connected to pipes that are vulnerable to freezing, such as those located along exterior walls or in unheated areas. The constant flow of water helps prevent the pipes from freezing.
  • Open Cabinet Doors: Open the cabinet doors under sinks, especially those on exterior walls, to allow warm air to circulate around the pipes. This is particularly important for kitchen and bathroom sinks located near exterior walls or in unheated areas.
  • Insulate Exposed Pipes: Insulate exposed pipes in unheated areas like attics and garages. Use pipe insulation or heat tape to keep them warm during cold weather.
  • Keep Your Home Warm: Maintain a consistent temperature in your home, even when you’re away. If you plan to be out of town, you might set your thermostat to at least 55°F to help keep pipes from freezing.
  • Seal Gaps and Cracks: Check for any gaps or cracks around windows, doors, or where pipes enter the home. Seal these gaps with caulk or weatherstripping to keep cold air out and warm air in.

By following these tips, you may help prevent the inconvenience and cost of frozen pipes.  Please remember that property owners are responsible for the maintenance and repair of pipes on their private property. The City of Pooler can only address issues related to city-owned water lines.

01/21/2025 @ 10:44 – CITY CLOSURES: In anticipation of hazardous weather, the Mayor has declared a State of Emergency for the City of Pooler, effective 12:00 p.m. today.

01/20/2025 @ 18:25 – WASTE COLLECTION POSTPONED: Atlantic Waste has reported that trash and recycling services will be suspended Wednesday, January 22 and resume Thursday, January 23. Regularly scheduled service for Thursday and Friday will operate on a one-day delay. Atlantic Waste understands that this may be an inconvenience, but thanks customers for their patience and understanding while everyone navigates this winter weather.

01/20/2025 @ 16:11 – UPDATED FORECAST: Confidence is high (80%) that our region will experience accumulating snow (1″-2″), freezing rain, and/or ice (.05″–.25″) Tuesday through Wednesday, potentially continuing into Thursday. The risk for significant travel disruptions remains as wet roads may refreeze.

The safety of our residents, businesses, and staff is our top priority and we encourage everyone to take necessary precautions during this weather event. With a wind chill that may reach 8°-15°F, we encourage you to follow these safety tips:

  • Protect Pets: Bring them inside or provide shelter.
  • Prevent Frozen Pipes: Insulate exposed pipes, let faucets drip, and seal cracks around pipes.
  • Stock Up: Ensure you have enough essentials (food, water, medications) for several days.
  • Check Heating Systems: Ensure furnaces and space heaters are working and have extra blankets available.
  • Use Space Heaters Safely: Keep three feet of clearance and follow safety instructions.
  • Weatherproof Your Home: Seal gaps around windows and doors.
  • Prepare Your Vehicle: Check tire pressure, antifreeze, and windshield wipers. Keep your gas tank full.
  • Stay Informed: Monitor local news and weather apps for updates.
  • Travel Caution: Avoid unnecessary travel during the storm and be prepared for possible delays.

01/20/2025 @ 15:28 – COUNCIL MEETING CANCELLED: Due to the forecasted inclement weather, the City Council Meeting scheduled for Tuesday, January 21, 2025 has been cancelled. All agenda items will be postponed until the next regular Council meeting on February 3, 2025.

We apologize for any inconvenience and thank you for your understanding. Please stay tuned to local updates and our website for further information.

01/19/2025 @ 14:02 – GDOT OPERATIONS: In anticipation of hazardous conditions, Georgia DOT crews have proactively begun brine operations on I-95 and I-16. Local teams will be working 12-hour shifts throughout the event, treating roadways, bridges, and overpasses.

Along with precipitation, a sharp cold front will bring subfreezing temperatures, with the greatest impacts anticipated Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday. Hazardous travel conditions are expected, and Cold Weather Advisories and Winter Storm Warnings are likely to be issued in the coming days. The City continues to monitor conditions and will provide updates.

01/18/2025 @ 14:15 – ROAD TREATMENT: Winter precipitation is becoming more likely to affect the area from Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday morning, with possible lingering impacts into Wednesday night and Thursday morning due to refreezing. The City will begin salting and sanding roads and bridges at 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 21, and will continue to monitor conditions throughout the event.

Current forecasts suggest minor to moderate accumulations, such as snow or ice, may disrupt travel and daily activities. Please be aware of changing road conditions, allow extra time for travel, and follow local advisories to ensure safety for yourself and others.

01/17/2025 @ 14:15 – WINTER WEATHER PREPAREDNESS: As we prepare for extreme winter weather next week, the City is taking proactive measures to ensure the safety and well-being of our residents. Cold temperatures are expected, particularly on Tuesday and Wednesday, with wind chill pushing temperatures to 10-20°F. Icy road conditions remain a concern, especially on bridges and areas with limited sunlight. To address this, the City will begin salting and sanding roads and bridges, prioritizing high-risk areas. Our Critical Workforce will be out monitoring road conditions and addressing any hazards as needed. We urge residents to stay informed by checking forecasts and exercising caution when traveling.

01/16/2025 @ 13:07 – LOW TEMPS EXPECTED: Due to upcoming weather conditions, Pooler could experience extremely low temperatures next week. The National Weather Service has issued a warning that freezing rain is possible on Tuesday, January 21, and citizens should prepare for potentially wet and/or icy road conditions. Any City closures will be posted here.
